This year’s first issue has the usual mix of articles, re-prints and reviews, starting with an evaluation of German Anarchist John Most (1846-1906) and the development of his politics. We show that in the years following his arrival in America, he was not a consistent anarchist in both tactics and vision of a social revolution. The latter reflected his Marxist-Blanquist past while the former – his advocacy of “propaganda by deed” – was due to misinformation on Bakunin spread by Marx and Engels. While he did help the emerging American revolutionary anarchist movement grow as well as becoming a consistent anarchist after 1887, his politics before that were in transition. We include a selection of writings from his anarchist period plus a report from The Alarm of one his speeches as well as The Beast of Property (1883), so that the anarchist and non-anarchist aspects of it can be seen.

This year’s second issue starts with Peter Kropotkin’s obituary for his friend and fellow anarchist and geographer Elisée Reclus (1830-1905). This is followed by various articles by Reclus which should hopefully indicate why he was as influential within the anarchist movement in his life as Kropotkin.

Following on from our “Kropotkin special” to mark the 180th anniversary of his birth, this issue is a “Proudhon special” to mark the 160th anniversary of his death – and the 185th anniversary of his proclaiming “I am an anarchist” in What is Property? and so anarchism as a named socio-economic theory. His answer to his book’s title (“Property is theft”) is so memorable it even featured in the film Oppenheimer, where it was attributed to Marx (much to the annoyance of various internet Marxists)

The main focus is anarchism and war, using the example of Kropotkin’s support for the Allies in 1914 as its starting point. We indicate that in 1914 the anarchist movement rose to the challenge and remained overwhelming faithful to its Internationalist principles and show the flaws with Kropotkin’s position and why it failed to gather support in the movement.
